Three-time Emmy winner Julia Garner — best known for her acclaimed turn as Ruth Langmore in Ozark — is set to star opposite Anthony Boyle in Netflix's upcoming limited series The Altruists. The eight-episode crime drama wrapped principal photography in November 2025, and early set images have already surfaced. Here's everything we know so far about the series.

The Altruists is a Netflix Original limited series co-created by Graham Moore and Jacqueline Hoyt, who serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. The project was first announced on May 2nd, 2025. James Ponsoldt is confirmed to direct the opening episode. Executive producers also include Vinnie Malhotra and Jessie Dicovitsky for Higher Ground Productions, Scoop Wasserstein for New York Magazine/Vox Media Studios, and Tonia Davis, Lauren Morelli, and Julia Garner herself. At the time of the official announcement, showrunner Graham Moore offered this statement about the project:

What is the plot of The Altruists?

Netflix has released the following official synopsis for The Altruists:

"Tells the story of Sam Bankman-Fried and Caroline Ellison, two hyper-smart, ambitious young idealists who tried to remake the global financial system in the blink of an eye — and then seduced, coaxed, and teased each other into stealing $8 billion."

Who are the cast members of The Altruists?

Julia Garner stars as Caroline Ellison. The actress is best recognized for her portrayal of Ruth Langmore in Ozark, a role that earned her three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. She also appeared in the Netflix limited series Inventing Anna and will next be seen in the MCU as the Silver Surfer in The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Anthony Boyle plays Sam Bankman-Fried. The actor has built a strong résumé in prestige television, with notable roles in Masters of the Air, Manhunt, and Say Nothing. He is also set to star as Arthur Guinness in Netflix's forthcoming historical drama House of Guinness.

As we first reported, Greta Carew Johns also appears in the series in a role that has yet to be officially disclosed. Based on set photos, she may be playing a love interest. The Australian actress is known for her work in Supergirl, A Million Little Things, and Meeting Mr. Christmas.

What is the production status of The Altruists?

Principal photography on the series ran from July 1 to November 24, 2025, with production based in Vancouver under the working title "Untitled Love Story."

Just one day into filming, on July 2nd, a batch of on-set photos emerged showing Anthony Boyle fully transformed into SBF — checkered shirt, signature curly hair and all.

Shortly after, Backgrid captured the first images of Julia Garner on set (see the full gallery on Instagram). Garner appears in heavy character makeup — including a prosthetic nose and thick-framed glasses — in what appears to be a scene set in an office lunch area, where her character, Caroline Ellison, is seen interacting with Bankman-Fried.

When is The Altruists' Netflix release date?

The Altruists is confirmed to be arriving on Netflix in 2026. Based on the production timeline, a second-half 2026 premiere seems most likely.
