Netflix's anticipated Kerri Strug biopic Perfect is officially dead. Millie Bobby Brown, who had been set to star as the Olympic gymnastics legend, has exited the project amid creative differences — a departure that ultimately led Netflix to cancel the film altogether. Here's a look back at what the project had promised before it unraveled.

Perfect was a Netflix Original biographical sports drama in development under the direction of Gia Coppola. The screenplay was co-written by Brown and Ronnie Sandahl, adapted from Kerri Strug's memoir Landing on My Feet: A Diary of Dreams. Brown was also attached as a producer through her PMCA Banner.

On the production side, Nik Power was set to produce through Riverstone Pictures, with Thomas Benski producing via Magna Films. Additional producers included Jeremy Baxter, Marisa Clifford, Deepak Nayar, Ronnie Sandahl, and Olivia Wilde.

According to Deadline, which broke the news of the cancellation, Brown departed over "creative differences with producers." Coppola had also recently exited the director's chair before the project fell apart entirely. Neither Netflix nor Brown's representatives offered comment on her departure.

What was the plot of Perfect?

The film's official synopsis described what the story would have explored:

"A Kerri Strug biopic, that tells the true story of the gymnast's triumph against the odds to win Team USA's first gold medal at the 1996 Olympics. Strug was hailed as an American hero when she completed her final vault at the Atlanta games on a badly injured ankle to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat."

Who is Kerri Strug?

Kerri Strug is a retired gymnast from Tucson, Arizona, and a former Olympic medalist who represented the United States at both the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Games.

As a member of the celebrated "Magnificent Seven," Strug played a pivotal role in securing Team USA's first-ever Olympic team gold in gymnastics. Her defining moment — sticking a vault landing on a badly injured ankle, then being carried off the mat by coach Béla Károlyi — remains one of the most enduring images in Olympic history.

Who was in the cast of Perfect?

Millie Bobby Brown was the sole confirmed cast member, set to portray Strug before her exit ended the production.

Despite the collapse of Perfect, Brown's relationship with Netflix remains firmly intact. The actress most recently concluded her run on the record-breaking final season of Stranger Things — which aired its series finale in December — and has headlined major Netflix releases including Damsel and The Electric State. Her upcoming slate for the streamer is substantial: Enola Holmes 3 is set to arrive later this year, followed by Just Picture It, A Time Lost, and an adaptation of her debut novel, Nineteen Steps.

It's worth noting that Thomasin McKenzie was originally attached to play Kerri Strug when the project was first reported in 2021, before it stalled and was eventually repackaged with Brown in the lead role.

What is the production status of Perfect?

Before the project collapsed, Production Weekly (issue 1495) had reported that principal photography on Perfect was scheduled to run from June 8 through July 29, 2026. With both the lead actress and director now gone, those plans have been abandoned entirely.

Will Perfect ever be released on Netflix?

No. The project has fallen apart at the creative level, and Netflix will not be moving forward with Perfect in its current form. Barring a full rebuild with a new cast and creative team — and a fresh home at another studio — this version of the Kerri Strug biopic is dead in the water.
